Here’s a Push-Up variation you can add to increase the engagement of the serratus anterior, which I call the Push-Up+
.

Shoulder pain commonly has hidden shoulder blade control issues...and one muscle to help combat this is the serratus anterior (aka the “boxer muscle” due to its role in pulling the scapula around the rib cage like in punching 🥊). It also has a big role to play whenever lifting weight overhead 🏋🏻‍♀️. You may have heard the term “winging scapula” before if your shoulder blade juts out whenever supporting yourself. Yup, you guessed it...serratus anterior.

Modalities are pretty cool.  They allow me to do things mechanically and physiologically that’s challenging to accomplish otherwise 🤗.

However... the tool itself is really only as effective as the person wielding it.
.
I've been blessed to have many instructors, mentors, colleagues, and friends shape how I approach injuries and human movement.  I have learned from them, listened to their pearls of wisdom, combined it all together and put my own spin on things.  Although I am a solo practitioner, I am most definitely not alone.  Thank you to these amazing people who continue to inspire me. 🙏🏼❤️

Honestly, compensation is at the root of nearly all the injuries I evaluate and treat.

As athletes, it can be challenging to strip weight off the bar or delay acquiring that next skill in order to correct body mechanics and gain motor control. But that would be your ego barking at ya..😏. Check that little liar at the door, and fix the fine details before poor movement ends up side-lining you from doing what you love.

I really enjoy working with young kids who are seeking improvement in their performance. I had a session with this amazing 15 year old, who has been experiencing knee pain while playing his sports and lifting. 
.

I call this a taco squat 🌮, where folding over at the hips is the default. One struggle this video shows is diminished hip control. This is where we chose to focus our attention this appointment.

We can see in this video improved hip control and position.

The process involved to address imbalances and to increase performance needs to start with movement evaluation and identifying the problem. I am really excited to watch the continued progress for this young man!!

Did I do something wrong?
Will I do more damage if I keep going?
I’ve lost all motivation. 
Will I ever recover and be back to normal?
.
Just a few examples, and all are valid. You should be able to discuss your fears, doubts and frustrations with the person helping you combat injury. 
.
I believe the mind and body are definitely not separate. The physical AND mental aspect of injury are all part of the process to heal.
